Question: Is eating flatfish halal?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, the one whose help in sought.
Fish, in all of its types, is permissible. Allah Almighty has declared it lawful, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ : أُحِلَّتْ لَكُمْ مَيْتَتَانِ وَدَمَانِ ، فَأَمَّا الْمَيْتَتَانِ ، فَالْحُوتُ وَالْجَرَادُ ، وَأَمَّا الدَّمَانِ ، فَالْكَبِدُ وَالطِّحَالُ
“It is narrated from ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar (رضي الله عنهما) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘Two dead things and two bloods have been made lawful for us. The two dead things are fish and locusts, and the two bloods are the liver and the spleen.’”
(Sunan Ibn Mājah, 3314)
Under this, ʿAllāmah Ibn ʿĀbidīn al-Shāmī (رحمه الله) states in Fatāwā Shāmī:
“ولا یحل حیوان مائی الا السمک”
“No aquatic animal is lawful except fish.”
(فتاوی شامی جلد 9 صفحہ 444)
And the author of al-Hidāyah states in al-Hidāyah:
“ولا یوکل من حیوان الماء الا السمک”
“From the animals of the water, nothing is to be eaten except fish.”
(ہدایہ جلد 4 صفحہ 441)
A flat-shaped fish also falls under the category of fish; therefore, eating it is permissible.”
