Question: I would like to ask whether Salatu Salaam after reciting from the Quraan and before Fatiha is read must be performed while standing, and whether not doing so is disrespectful to our beloved Prophet Mohammad sallalaahoe alaihi wasallam.
بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم
الحمد لله رب العالمين والصلاة والسلام على سيد المرسلين وعلى اله و اصحابه اجمعين
Answer:
Sending blessings and peace upon the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) is a highly virtuous and desirable act. It is also in complete accordance with the command of Allah Almighty. Allah Almighty says in the Holy Qur’an:
“اِنَّ اللّٰهَ وَ مَلٰٓىٕكَتَهٗ یُصَلُّوْنَ عَلَى النَّبِیِّؕ- یٰۤاَیُّهَا الَّذِیْنَ اٰمَنُوْا صَلُّوْا عَلَیْهِ وَ سَلِّمُوْا تَسْلِیْمًا”
“Indeed, Allah and His angels send blessings upon the Prophet. O you who believe, send blessings upon him and peace.”
“(Juz 22, Surah Al-Ahzab, Verse 56)”
In light of this verse, scholars state that the command to send blessings and peace is general and unrestricted. There is no limitation regarding time, place, or condition. Therefore, one may send blessings and peace upon the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) at any time and in any permissible manner, whether standing or sitting.
Furthermore, standing while reciting Salat and Salam in the presence or remembrance of the Beloved Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) is considered a recommended act, as it is done out of respect and reverence.
Thus, Imam Ahl al-Sunnah, Imam Ahmad Raza Khan Barelvi (may Allah have mercy on him), states:
“It is recommended and praiseworthy to stand as a mark of respect for the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) at the time of mentioning the blessed birth of the Master of the Messengers (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).”
“(Fatawa Razawiyyah, Volume 26, Page 507)”
Therefore, reciting Salat and Salam after the recitation of the Qur’an or before Surah al-Fatihah is a virtuous act. Reciting it while standing is recommended, while reciting it while sitting is also permissible. There is no element of disrespect or blasphemy in either practice.
